AUDI QUATTRO (1980-1991) CAR HISTORY

The idea of four-wheel drive as an aid to fast road driving rather than pure off-roading may not have been new (Jensen introduced the FF super car in 1966), but Audi certainly pioneered the art-form in the real world. The 1980 Quattro was the first mass-produced performance car to feature permanent four-wheel drive.

The four-wheel-drive system rewrote everyone's definition of handling limits. It certainly made it probably the safest car to be driving in wet or icy conditions. Reports in some journals even seemed to suggest that the Quattro was invincible around corners whatever the road conditions; in fact of course every car has its limits, and the Quattro's were simply much higher than oilier cars', but unfortunately dozens of owners found this out the hard way by asking too much of the car, and ending lip in a ditch.

The body was based around the recently launched coupe, with suitably bulging wings and a deeper front spoiler. Audi was not above adding gimmicks to the package, notably a dubious digital talking dash.

Power was also very high thanks to a turbocharged 2.1-litre five-cylinder engine. There was mighty turbo lag (the time it took for the turbocharger to cut in), but when it did, the Quattro simply flew: 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) in 6.3 seconds was stunningly fast for 1980. Braking was criticized for having too much front bias, but Audi soon corrected this with standard anti-lock brakes.
This was not a cheap car by any standards: it cost more than a Jaguar XJS or Mercedes-Benz SL, but then it did otter a completely new class of driving experience.

The Quattro permanent (full-time) four-wheel-drive system also turned the rally world upside-down. Audi swept the board with its newcomer, and very soon everyone recognized that they weren't going to win anything unless they, too, adopted an all-wheels-driven strategy.

Later models got a bigger engine and more power, and the ultimate Quattro was the short-wheelbase Sport model launched in 1983. This limited-production homologation (production-recognized) special had a 300 bhp 20V engine and was capable of 155 mph (249 kph). At three times the price of a standard Quattro, it was strictly for rich would-be rallying stars.

When Audi announced that Quattro would soon be axed, there was an outcry from enthusiasts and the production run was extended, the model finally bowing out in 1991, after 11 years of service. For many people, this superb Audi was deserving of the title "car of the decade"
