Aston Martin is part of a rich tradition of British coach built sports cars. Its place is unique as a purveyor of brutally powerful, finely handcrafted, traditionally finished grand tourers. The "DB" dynasty of cars stretches back to 1947, the letters DB harking back to Sir David Brown, who owned Aston Martin from 1947 to 1972, and who helped design the DB7.

Ford became the new owner of Aston Martin in 1987. As well as giving the company the backing of a large organization, it instituted a new model program reviving the DB name on a new car that was designed to slot in below the existing Virage range. To develop this important newcomer, it turned to Tom Walkinshaw's TWR organization to do its best on the ageing platform of the Jaguar XJS.
The DB7 was the supremely elegant result. In style it was a classic, two-plus-two, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car with superbly integrated, flowing lines designed by lan Callum. Some were tempted to call it the most beautiful car in the world.

It was powered by a new 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine, which looked back to the past to boost its horse power: an Eaton supercharger helped it develop a massive 335 bhp, enough to take the DB7 to a top speed of 155 mph (249 kph), with acceleration to match. Technically, the DB7 was very sophisticated, having sequential fuel injection, four-piston brakes and specially designed tires.
This was a superb car to drive, sharp enough to cut it as a sport scar yet refined enough to make a convincing grand tourer. The chassis was pure magic.

Inside, rich Connolly leather upholstery was standard, as was traditional British burr walnut for the dashboard and centre console. Standard equipment included electric front-seat controls, air-conditioning, electric roof and Alpine sound system. There may not have been much room in the rear seats but at least they were there, and they could always double up as extra luggage space.
If the coupe looked seductive, the Volante convertible was the ultimate temptress in markets such as the US where up to 80 per cent of Aston Martin sales were of this model.

This was certainly not a cheap car, especially in Volante convertible form, and some people questioned whether it was worth paying the extra for the DB7 when the Jaguar XK8, launched shortly after, looked and behaved so similarly and cost so much less. The Aston Martin was very much more exclusive, however, since a maximum of 700 per year could be built at the factory, and the badge carries a special set of qualities.
