Car review on ALFA ROMEO GT/ GTV

This smart sports coupe was launched in 1974 as the Alfetta GT. It was based o a shortened version of the Alfetta saloon floor pan, so it shared its racing-inspired rear-mounted gearbox. Perhaps the car's best feature was its superbly clean styling by Giugiaro. This was also a very practical car thanks to its hatchback rear opening.

The interior was very distinctive: only the rev counter (tachometer) was sited in front of the driver. All the other gauges were stacked in a central binnacle. There was more room for people than in most coupes in the GT class.

Initially, there was only one engine, the Alfelta 1.8, but by 1976, 1.6 and2.0-litre units were added, the latter called GTV. There was even a very potent turbocharged- model, but this was sold in tiny numbers (around 20). In 1980, the 2.0 GTV became the only model sold and got a face-lift, featuring larger bumpers and a more conventional instrument layout.

The best GTV of all was undoubtedly the GTV6 of 1980. Into the familiar body Alfa Romeo fitted a fuel-injected 2.5-litre V-six engine. Performance was now extremely high, and suspension changes and a limited slip differential made it handle superbly. Yet this was not the quickest GTV of all: that honor goes to the GTV 3.0 produced in Alfa Romeo's South African factory. Like other GTV models, this boasted considerable success on the race-track, as well as being a very satisfying car to drive on the road. Today, it is the most desirable of the classic GTV family.
