Before Posting Your Resume—Some Things to Consider

For some people, posting a resume online has been a great way to get work

Others fear that their home address and phone number will fall into the wrong

hands, or that the wrong organizations-such as their current employer-will

see it and problems will arise. You are the only one who can say how comfort-

able you are with this decision and how you want to approach the idea of

posting your resume. Before you begin, think about the following questions.

1. Do you want your resume public?

Once you have posted it, your resume is a public document and out of your control.

Anyone can look in the public data bases and see what is there. Even the private

resume databanks as well as thoseoffering -confidential handling" of your resume

may not let you dictate who can and cannot look at your resume.

To maintain a level of privacy, consider posting only your skill set, a summary

of your areas of interest and expertise. Also, instead of putting your home

address and phone number on the document, consider renting a post office box

and subscribing to an answering or paging service- when your search is over,

Don't list only an e-mail address on your resume and assume that the recruiters

who are looking online will just contact you online. Many employers and

recruiters still prefer to contact you by phone and will skip over your resume if

a phone number is not listed. As one recruiter put it, "If this candidate looks

like a good fit for a job I have to fill, I want to speak with him or her now, not

in several hours or days when he or she gets around to checking the e-mail."

Yes, they might get your answering service instead of you, but they still feel

they've connected with you.

Never use your office address and phone number on your resume. When other

employers see you doing this, they may feel that you are stealing from your

employer, using company time for your own purposes instead of business, and

using the company's resources for your own advancement. If you'll do it to

that employer, the thinking goes, you'll probably do it to the next one, too.

If you include an e-mail address on your resume, make sure it is a personal

account. If the only Internet access you have is through your current employer,

then register for an account with one of the free e-mail services (see Chapter i)

and go check your e-mail at the public library's workstations. Like using your

office phone number on your resume, using your office e-mail for your job search

is viewed by many employers as stealing. Getting a private e-mail account looks

better and helps you avoid potential e-mail monitoring by your employer, as well.

TIPS

E-Mail Monitoring by Employers. Is your boss checking your e-mail? In a survey by the American

Management Association (http://www.amanet.org), 27 percent of U.S. companies who responded said

they monitored their employees' e-mail in 1998, and the study estimates that overall, 45 percent of U.S.

companies electronically monitored communications within the company, including e-mail, phone usage,

and computer files. And yes, it is legal as long as your employer tells you this is going on. More informa-

tion on this report is available on the AMA website.

2. How confidential is the database or service on which you are placing your resume?

Who can get access to this database? How is that access granted? Will you be

notified if your resume is forwarded to an employer? Will you be contacted

before your resume is released? Is it possible your boss will see your resume? If

the answers to these questions are not easily found on the website of the

resume service, then look for an e-mail address or phone number and contact

the service directly. If the answers make you the least bit uncomfortable,

consider using another service, or not posting at all.

3. Once your resume is listed, can it be updated at no cost?

Some online serviceswill let you post your resume at no cost, but they either charge

you for updates or don't permit them at all. You don't want an old resume out there,

and you don't want to pay for updates. Look for services that offer an unlimited number

4. Will your resume be deleted from the databank if you don't update or renew it?

Once you are successfully employed in a new job, you probably don't want to

be getting calls from other employers because your resume is still sitting in a

database somewhere. A good database will delete your resume within three

months if it is not updated or renewed; a better one will give you a password

and allow you to update your resume or delete it yourself whenever you choose.

TIPS

Will Your Electronic Resume Come Back to Haunt You? Some job seekers are falling victim to aggressive

recruiters who grab their resumes from the Internet and unwittingly feed them back to the job seekers'

current employers, with very bad results for the employee. Others are finding their resumes posted in

places they never put them, the victims of unprofessional resume services who copy the documents from

other open venues. Some employees have even been confronted by current employers brandishing copies of

their resumes which they found online, not realizing that the documents were more than a year old and

part of the campaign to get the current job. You don't have to be scared off the Internet, but you should

be aware of what can go wrong. Check out the following articles for more information and what you can do
